Vodafone and EE team up with Virgin Media for London Underground WiFi
Starting next year, customers of Vodafone or EE will be able to benefit from London Underground WiFi thanks to a deal struck with Virgin Media. Earlier this year, Virgin Media launched their London Underground WiFi service in time for the Olympics and have extended the ‘free’ period until the end of the year.
Once the ‘free’ period finishes at the end of the year, users of Virgin Media, Vodafone and EE (include Orange and T-Mobile) will still be able to get online without charge.
Users of other networks will also be able to surf underground but will have to subscribe to a daily, weekly or monthly pass (starting at £2 per day).
Currently 72 Tube stations are covered with London Underground WiFi, with Virgin Media adding another 20 by the end of the year and a further 28 early next year. This will mean that of the 270 tube stations in the capital, more than one third will be wireless enabled. It is hoped that all of the stations that are actually underground without mobile network coverage will be the first to benefit from WiFi but this remains to be seen.
