CBC Music now available on Android devices, a BlackBerry app “is not necessary”.

The CBC recently launched their CBC Music online music portal, along with an associated iPhone and iPad app.

This gave users the ability to stream CBC Radio 2, CBC Radio 3 and also listen to over 40 genre-specific radio stations (Canadian and international) – it’s commercial-free but there are ads within the app.

Today they have followed through and made the app available to Android users. Version 1.0 is compatible with Android devices (phones and tablets) that run OS 2.1 and above. CBC says the CBC Music app streams at 128kbps and they estimate is uses “approximately 60 megabytes of data per hour, or 1mb per minute.”

There doesn’t seem to be any other dedicated apps in the works.

CBC does mention BlackBerry – which accounts for a large amount of Canadian smartphone users – but states that:

‘An app for Blackberry Playbook is not necessary, as users can get the full CBC Music experience at CBCMusic.ca. For Blackberry mobile phone users, we hope to have a Blackberry solution in the future, but no app is imminent.’
